SERVICING A COMPACTOR

Though the compactor contains a myriad of safety devices, primarily to prevent children from being harmed, it is an easy-to-use appliance. On most models you lift the door slightly and pull it forward, and then you insert a key and turn a lock switch before a pushbutton switch starts the compaction cycle. With the drawer in the fully-shut position, the ram progresses downward to within about 5 inches of the bag bottom. It's a good idea not to place any cans within 5 inches of the bottom prime" the new hag with paper, etc. This provides cushion of sorts at the bottom of the container to keep bottles and cans from puncturing the bag. Sun tear won't hurt. Liquids ale absorbed by the bag and the paper normally found as part of the trash front most households. In fact, its estimated paper comprises phase motor is used in the trash compactor, its rotation is easily reversed simply by reversing the relationship of the starting and running windings. In most compactors, this relationship is determined by the contact positions of a switch located near the top of a stationary frame. As soon as the ram begins to travel downward, a linkage causes these contacts to change positions. Since by this time the starting windings have already been disengaged from the circuit by the relay, or centrifugal switch, it has no effect upon the rotation and the ram continues its downward travel. As soon as stall out occurs, however, the relay or switch, is again called upon to try to restart the motor. Now since the switch positions are interchanged, the direction is reversed and the ram immediately begins to travel upward. The same condition would occur if the ram were to stop for any other reason pushing the stop button, trying to open the door, or even by power failure at any time during a downward movement of the ram assembly. Compactors are of two basic types. In top loaders, the trash is put into the top of the compartment. In this type the ram retracts up into the top few inches of the machine and extends down into the container only when compacting. The second basic type is the drawer-loaded unit. The drawer pulls forward from the base of the machine and you deposit trash much as you would in a garbage can. The drawer must then be closed before the compaction cycle can occur. Regardless of type, little routine maintenance is necessary. Clean the machine periodically with soap and water, and replace disposable bags and deodorizer sprays if used on your unit.
