HOW AIR CIRCULATES IN FROSTLESS REFRIGERATORS

How air circulates in two popular models of frostless refrigerators. In the top-freezer refrigerator model, the fin-and-tube refrigerator evaporator is located on the back wall of the freezer liner. The air moves from the evaporator through the air duct in freezer bottom. In side-by-side refrigerator models, a thermostatic damper is often used to regulate amount of chilled air which enters refrigerator compartment. Courtesy of Whirlpool Corp. ice confection, such as a Popsicle, remove the protective paper wrapping, and place it in the freezer compartment of your frostless refrigerator. In a couple of weeks, there'll be nothing left but two sticks and a little puddle of syrup. Frontless freezers operate in the same manner as frontless refrigerators except that they have only one compartment and the evaporator plate may cover the entire rear wall or may form a double-hank fin-and-tube arrangement around the bottom of the refrigerator compartment. The refrigeration system and the controls are altered to attain the colder temperatures required in a freezer. The evaporator surface is larger, and the refrigerator thermostats are calibrated to maintain a near-zero temperature. The larger ducting passageways in frost-free models often cover the entire rear wall of the single compartment. Symptoms and refrigerator repair procedures are the same as for refrigerator close proximity to a frigid air outlet make this an excellent method it quick-freeze foods before moving them to another area of the storage. Some refrigerator makers also add a push-button device to lock the thermostat contacts until the freezer has reached a colder-than-normal temperature.

RULES FOR THE USE AND CARE OF REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS

A question often asked goes something like this: "Why does my new refrigerator run so much'?" Or: "What can I do to keep my refrigerator from using so much power'?" The average new refrigerator purchased today contains 17 cubit; feet of storage space. The one replaced may have contained only 10, The new refrigerator is cooling almost as much storage space as two old refrigerators. Also the added conveniences such as frostless refrigeration and automatic ice maker increase refrigerator power consumption. You can't do anything about reducing refrigerator power needs for these conveniences, but you can easily keep refrigerator power consumption to a minimum by using the refrigerators in the most efficient manner. Keep air circulating as it should. Keep the refrigerator condenser clean and make sure there is plenty of room around the refrigerator or freezer. Check your instruction manual for front, top, and side clearances and make sure you adhere to them. Keep all food covered and wipe up spills. Replace any torn refrigerator gaskets and remedy any other causes of air leakage into the cabinet. Keep refrigerator controls set no lower than is necessary to keep foods properly chilled. This should normally be within a range of 35 to 40 degrees in the refrigerator compartment and 0 to + 10 degrees in the freezer. Basic refrigerators do not have freezer compartments capable of maintaining such a low temperature. They range from +5 degrees to +20 degrees. Probably the most important power-saving tip is to keep opening of doors to a minimum. Each time you open the refrigerator door, heavy cold air inside the compartment flows out to the floor of the room. Make certain the unit is reasonably level to insure proper operation of the defrost water-drainage system.

Please note that this information is for your own educational purposes and we aren’t suggesting tips for doing-it-yourself. Repairing and servicing refrigerator units requires knowledge, training and experience. Trying to fix something that you are not familiar with can be costly and, more important, dangerous for your safety.
