REPLACING A DEFECTIVE OVEN LIGHT

PROBLEM: Your oven light does not go on when you press the light switch.
Failure of all ovens light to operate properly have three possible causes: (1) the bulb has failed; (2) receptacle contacts are corroded; or (3) the light switch is defective.

Burned out bulb. The first step is to test the bulb itself. An oven bulb is smaller than most household bulbs and fits into a tightly recessed area in most ovens. As a consequence, you may not be able to use all ordinary household bulbs as a tester, but will have to purchase a new bulb from an appliance parts store. Screw the new bulb into the oven receptacle. Turn on the oven switch. If the new bulb lights, the original oven bulb has burned out. If the light still does not go on, the problem is not a burned-out bulb. Remove the new bulb and save it for when the old bulb does burn out.
Corroded receptacle contacts. Turn off electricity to the oven at the main electrical service panel. After you have done so, examine the contacts inside the bulb receptacle. If they are corroded or grease-filled, rub them clean with a rubber pencil eraser. Blow any loose particles front the receptacle. Install the bulb, and turn on electricity. If the bulb still does not work, ask your hardware store for a stronger cleaner to remove the corrosion. Defective light switch. If neither the bulb nor the receptacle contacts are at fault, the on and off switch is probably worn out. This is almost certainly the problem if the switch feels loose and sloppy, or catches as you flip it oil and off. To replace the oven switch, do the following:
1. Turn off electricity to the oven.
2. Disassemble the oven door or open the console panel; the switch is located in one or the other.
3. Using self-adhering labels or strips of masking tape, label the wires so you can tell which one connects to each terminal of the switch, then disconnect the wires. In most ovens, wires are held to the switch, pull-off spade connectors. When these parts, grasp the connector itself pull the wire, or it may separate from the connector.
4. Buy a matching oven switch from an appliance parts dealer. Install the new switch, making sure that the oven wires are connected to the proper terminals.

Setting Oven Clocks Correctly.
If the oven self-cleaning feature of an oven fails to work, your first step is to make sure the oven clocks are set in accordance with the instructions in the owner's manual. Oven manufacturers identify the failure to set clocks correctly as the main cause for a nonworking oven self-cleaning feature. Many homeowners learn this only after they have called in a technician and paid the cost of it service call.

Please note that this information is for your own educational purposes and we aren’t suggesting tips for doing-it-yourself. Repairing and servicing oven units requires knowledge, training and experience. Trying to fix something that you are not familiar with can be costly and, more important, dangerous for your safety.
