Garbage Disposal good advice:
To get rid of the foul smell from the disposal, cut up a lemon and grind it in the disposal (you can also add baking soda). Stringy-type items like corn husks do not grind well and can "string up" all the little cutters inside. Do not pour hot grease into the disposal because as it solidifies as it cools. If the disposal ever fails to work, there is normally a red reset button on the disposal bottom. If a ring falls into the disposal, turn the unit off as fast as you can. The ring may be saved if you act fast enough. If you do not find the ring in the disposal itself, look in the sink trap. If not there, and if you acted quickly, it's in the lines. Use no water in the house. You will have to cut all the lines apart (and perhaps the walls) in the attempt to find it. Otherwise, it is long gone. The chance of finding a ring in a septic tank is almost zero.
This should be obvious: Never put your hand into a running disposal. To be really safe, tape the switch in the off position before you put your hand in, especially if there is a second person in the kitchen.
Are Disposals and Septic Systems Compatible?
I am often asked, is there a problem if I have a septic tank? The answer is no. Go right ahead and install one. You should not have problems with a disposal unless your basic kitchen plumbing has serious problems that a disposal might worsen. For those who are skeptical (despite my reassurances) that a garbage disposal will work with their system, In-Sink-Erator makes a special disposal for houses with septic tanks. It injects a liquid biotreatment into the grinding chamber that contains millions of active microorganisms to waste before it even reaches disposal pipe over a long run, or an the septic tank.
